OVERVIEW OF THE BORDEAUX 2018 VINTAGE

The 2018 vintage in Bordeaux is characterized by a very particular climate during the year. The first part of the season was difficult for wine growers in the region because of a wet and mild spring, followed by frequent rain – and sometimes, even hail - until early summer. This increased the risk of damage and the development of mildew, which presented itself as particularly virulent this year.
This unpredictable weather, which initially slowed down the development of the vine, then gave way to much dryer and hotter weather for the rest of the summer. This weather continued unexpectedly until the end of October, allowing the grapes to acquire an exceptional level of maturity.
This surprise end-of-season climate has allowed us to harvest perfectly healthy red grapes with thick skins that are rich in aromatics, in colour and in ripeness. This in turn gave us grapes with high quality tannins. As early as at the end of the initial vinification process, we saw that this 2018 vintage has the potential to join the greatest success stories of Bordeaux vintages
The tastings so far of the wines confirm our thoughts. The Merlot wines are rich in scent, deep and dense, while maintaining freshness despite a high alcoholic content. The Cabernet varietal wines are lively, robust but smooth, with the aromatic brilliance of the greatest vintages.
We feel that 2018 is certain to be a great year.

CHÂTEAU PUYNARD 'THE STEPS' 2016

The Steps 2016 were sourced from our 2-hectare, clay-limestone soils, which were particularly well adapted to the hot drought during the summer of 2016. On our way to becoming certified organic, we took extra care at every stage of the winemaking process. Carefully hand-picking our grapes in small crates from 35 year old vines, we carefully sort the grapes once they are in the winery. The grapes were then cold soaked for 3 days and further macerated for 28 days to extract the excellent colour of the berries in this vintage. For 15 months, the 70% of the wine was fermented in new French oak, the remainder in vat, to give structure to a wine with excellent volume, chewy tannins and a long finish. Thankfully, the higher yields in 2016 balanced the highly concentrated fruit from the summer, and gave us an elegant and balanced wine.

CHÂTEAU PUYNARD PREMIUM 2016

From 40 year old vines, this is our best expression of the quality Cabernet Sauvignon from our clay-limestone vineyards in Berson on the right bank of Bordeaux. A blend of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Merlot, the ripe and rich fruit is well-matched to the time it spent in 100% new French oak. The 2016 vintage was characterised by a dry and hot summer that was broken by a storm on the 13th September. After this time, the relatively cool days up to harvest means the fruit was ripe and rich but with good acidity and tannic structure. The intensity of the fruit and quality of the tannins allows this wine to be drunk now or age for 5 to 8 years for further development. Only 1200 bottles produced.

CHÂTEAU PUYNARD 2016

Although 2016 is now considered a ‘classical vintage’ for right-bank Bordeaux, the weather had us on a cliff edge throughout the year. It was not until a storm came on the 13th September that the summer drought came to an end. Our sandy-clay and clay-lime soils protected the vine from the drought conditions by holding the water in the soil, where more sandy soils would have caused the vines to shut down in the heat. Our older vines of 35-years benefited from having deep roots, resulting in dark berries, ripe tannins with fresh acidity. In the winery, the grapes were macerated on their skins fro 28 days, and carefully transferred to temperature controlled vats for fermentation. The free-run wine was then aged in stainless vats without oak to promote the excellent fruit quality. The blend is 85% Merlot with 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, with plenty of red and blue fruit balanced by good acidity.

CHÂTEAU PUYNARD CRÉMANT DE BORDEAUX ROSÉ BRUT NATURE

A very dry sparkling wine that is a modern take on the traditional Cremant de Bordeaux style. Having converted to organic viticulture by the end of 2017, the Cabernet Sauvignon grapes from our 0.5 hectare site are hand-picked in small crates and then gently pressed in a pneumatic wine press, carefully managed in a very controlled environment to preserve the delicate aromas. As we do with our still Chateau Puynard Rosé, the free-run wine is cool fermented in stainless steel vats. The second fermentation, how the bubbles are formed (“prise de mousse”), is the traditional Champagne method with disgorgement after 8 months on the lees. This occurs in cool caves in Saint-Emilion for a slow second fermentation to develop complexity of flavour but also to retain freshness of acidity. At only 1.5 grams of residual sugar, the sparkling wine is extra brut in style. Only 2000 bottles, it has pretty red fruit with lively bubbles that zip across the palate to a mouth-watering finish.

CHÂTEAU PUYNARD 2015

After we acquired Chateau Puynard, the 2015 wine represented a new start for the property. As our first wine, this is where we began realising the potential of the vineyards and began our journey towards sustainable viticulture. Planted with 30 year old vines on sandy-clay and clay-lime soils in the Côte de Blaye on the right bank, the purity of the fruit in this great vintage was evident at an early stage. A blend of 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, the grapes were hand-picked on the earlier side of the harvest dates to retain the freshness in the grapes. They were then carefully vinified with a soft pumping over, macerating on the skins for 21 to 25 days and aged in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats, rather than oak, to preserve the pure fruit character. With 42,000 bottles produced, this is a fruit-forward Bordeaux red blend with a satisfying amount of weight and power, with Cabernet Sauvignon adding structure to the ripe and spicy fruit.
