CHÂTEAU PUYNARD 'TRADITION'

Overview

Our older vines in this blend, of 35-years, benefit from having deep roots - resulting in dark berries, ripe tannins and fresh acidity. In the winery, the grapes are macerated on their skins from 28 days, and carefully transferred to temperature controlled vats for fermentation. The free-run wine is then aged in stainless steel vats without oak to promote the excellent fruit quality. The blend is 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, with plenty of red and blue fruit, balanced by good acidity.

CHÂTEAU PUYNARD 'THE STEPS'

Overview

The Steps grapes are sourced from our 2-hectare, clay-limestone soils. Carefully hand-picking our grapes in small crates from 35 year old vines, we then sort the grapes once they are in the winery. The grapes are then cold soaked for 3 days and further macerated for 28 days to extract the excellent colour of the berries. For 15 months, 70% of the wine is fermented in new French oak, the remainder in vat, to give structure to a wine with excellent volume, chewy tannins and a long finish - finally giving us an elegant and well balanced wine.

CHÂTEAU PUYNARD PRESTIGE

Overview

From 40 year old vines, this is our best expression of the quality Cabernet Sauvignon from our clay-limestone vineyards in Berson, on the right bank of Bordeaux. A blend of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Merlot, the ripe and rich fruit is well-matched to the time it spends in 100% new French oak. This in turn allows us a wine that is rich but with good acidity and tannic structure. The intensity of the fruit and quality of the tannins allows this wine to be drunk now or age for 5 to 8 years for further development.

Only 1200 bottles produced.

Château Puynard Cuvée Merlot 2018

Produced in 2018 for the first time, this newcomer to the Château Puynard collection is distinguished by its richness and opulence. The color is intense, the nose presents a combination of aromas reminiscent of black cherry, prune compote, nutmeg and scents of thyme. The volume in the mouth is present, confirming the black fruits associated with toasted notes. A velvety texture and a fleshy substance carried by silky tannins with a long toasted finish.Dishes: wild boar pâté, beef Bourguignon, roast lamb, duck confit, a pheasant or a good Camembert will do the trick.

CHÂTEAU PUYNARD CRÉMANT DE BORDEAUX ROSÉ BRUT NATURE

A very dry sparkling wine that is a modern take on the traditional Cremant de Bordeaux style. Having converted to organic viticulture by the end of 2017, the Cabernet Sauvignon grapes from our 0.5 hectare site are hand-picked in small crates and then gently pressed in a pneumatic wine press, carefully managed in a very controlled environment to preserve the delicate aromas. As we do with our still Chateau Puynard Rosé, the free-run wine is cool fermented in stainless steel vats. The second fermentation, how the bubbles are formed (“prise de mousse”), is the traditional Champagne method with disgorgement after 8 months on the lees. This occurs in cool caves in Saint-Emilion for a slow second fermentation to develop complexity of flavour but also to retain freshness of acidity. At only 1.5 grams of residual sugar, the sparkling wine is extra brut in style. Only 2000 bottles, it has pretty red fruit with lively bubbles that zip across the palate to a mouth-watering finish.
